bio
Since 2001, Rudy Bustamante has served as the community relations officer for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in the Department for Homeland Security. He currently oversees community outreach over Arizona and Nevada and acts as a liaison with municipal, county, and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as local governments and communities groups. In addition, he serves as a liaison with the Mexican Consulate.
From 2001-2002, Mr. Bustamante was assigned to Washington, D.C., where he served as acting director of community relations for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) during the transition from the Immigration and Naturalization Service in the Department of Justice to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in the Department of Homeland Security. He began his work with DHS after retiring from the Phoenix Police Department, where he was the community liaison between the Hispanic community and the police department. He managed the Hispanic Advisory Board to the Phoenix Police Department, which involved researching important community issues, meeting with community leaders, and keeping community members informed of crisis incidents. His work with the police department extended far beyond his service as a community liaison, including working as a school resource officer and leading the Police Activities League's program for children at risk.
For years, Mr. Bustamante has remained active in the community serving on a variety of boards and commissions. He is currently a board member for Phoenix Memorial Hospital and president of the board of directors for Valencia Homeowners’ Association. In the past, he served as a member of the Friendly House Auxiliary Board, Assistant Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America, member on the Safety Answers for Education (SAFE) Commission for the Arizona State Senate (shared with former Phoenix Police Chief, Chief Harold Hurtt), chair of the Library Issues Subcommittee for the City of Chandler Citizen Bond Committee, member of the Substance Abuse/Violence Subcommittee (Tempe Union High School District), member of the Safe Schools Committee (Phoenix Elementary School District), member of Phoenix Mayor’s Ad Hoc Task Force on School Violence, participant in City of Chandler Visions of the Future planning conference and Youth Town Hall, and president of the Board for the Children’s Activity Museum of Metro Phoenix. He recently completed the City of Chandler City Services Academy, maintaining that service to the community is the most effective way to implement positive change.
