Please join us for three Mondays in April (11th, 18th, and 25th) for the Critical Border Issues Series with a panel discussion from 6-7:00 PM on timely topics related to the security, prosperity and environment of the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders.

 

April 11: "Arizona’s Competitiveness in North America and Beyond."

 

Haru Yamasaki, CEO, TechBA Arizona will discuss an innovative Mexican federal government “incubator” for Mexican high-tech businesses that is located here in Phoenix.

Rick Stephenson, Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner, Office of the Canadian Consulate in Phoenix will discuss the consulate’s work in Arizona as well as the landscape for Canadian companies operating in Arizona. Both will address the key question, “Why Arizona?”. NACTS Associate Director, Erik Lee will moderate.

 

April 18: “Touching Water, Negotiating Water: The Columbia River Treaty as Metaphor.”

 

Dr. Jeremy Mouat, Fulbright Visiting Research Chair and Professor of History and Chair of the Social Sciences department at the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus will review a history of binational cooperation on the Columbia River that provides flood control, irrigation, electrical power, and fisheries challenges to both the U.S. and Canada.

NACTS Director D. Rick Van Schoik will discuss recent efforts on the U.S.–Mexico border to enhance generation and exchange of renewable energy informed by the lessons learned on the U.S.-Canadian border.

 

April 25: “Cultivating Transborder Resilience: Strategies to Preserve and Protect Eco-systems Services.”

 

NACTS Sustainability Fellows and their clients; Jennie Curéand a private grass bank, Erika Mahoneyand the Sonoran Institute, and Dorothy Ibes and the Municipal Planning Institute of Nogales, Sonora will present case studies of how work on one side of the border links and potentially enhances ecosystem services on the other side and of the commons. Director D. Rick Van Schoik will moderate.
