Destination Sustainability: Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Freight Transportation in North America
Commission for Environmental Cooperation Secretariat
March 2011
The CEC Secretariat's latest report under Article 13 of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation presents findings and recommendations on environmentally sustainable freight transportation in North America. The report contains recommendations for actions that will make a profound contribution to the environmental sustainability of the North American transportation system.
NACTS Director Rick Van Schoik contributed to Destination Sustainability as one of the primary transportation experts in collaboration with a group of more than sixty transportation experts, government officials, operators, and other key stakeholders.
The report concludes that the policies, regulations, and incentives necessary to accomplish sustainable transportation-at a continental scale-will also make our freight system more efficient, competitive, and energy-secure. Cross-border cooperation to improve environmental performance of the North American freight system is urgently needed—not just to enhance environmental sustainability, but to safeguard regional economic competitiveness.
