Which border are we worried about?
Life is complicated. No seriously, it's not a cliché because people constantly forget that this simple statement has significant influence over our lives. Take for example the immigration problem in Mexico, no not the one about Mexicans coming to the United States. You know, the one about the Central Americans passing through and/or staying in Mexico. Today's New York Times, "Mexico town split over Central American drifters" describes a situation that is many years old and no one has an answer for how to address it. Of course as in the United States, the first failure is the inability of federal and local officials to communicate with one another. The federal government passes laws and makes statements that just do not apply to Tultitlan, a town about an hour's drive outside Mexico City. Does, that sound familiar people of Nogales, Laredo, Ojinaga? This not to say that the Mexican/US border is the same as the Mexico/Guatemalan border, no far from it. But c'mon people can we at least have some consistency in communication, terminology, and a consistent commitment to human rights. I know, I know, it's complicated. Ugh!
